Sunday Morning...and the fire still burns...

We got up early - Michael had to call around to find someone to teach his Sunday School class, while Im looking in the mirror at the wrinkles on my eyeballs! Literally!! Muchness grossness!!
At about 8-ish, we headed down to Mum and Dad's with Molly-Wally in tow, with Michael carrying her 'special' blankie for her to sleep on. We put her on the run with one of her special icypoles (a hunk of meat that's been frozen in the freezer - it takes her ages to finish one and by that time she's forgotten that we left her at home by herself!) with the intention of being home in about 3 hours...plenty of time for a nap etc, etc.
We reach the 'end' of our intended back-burn first and decided to wait there a while for the other members of our fire brigade (we belong to the Bluebell Rural Bush Fire Brigade), but after they didnt turn up for a little while, we then drove a couple of kms to where we were going to start the back-burn. When the other guys turned up Michael and I grabbed drip-torches and started lighting up,while the others grabbed rake-hoes and wet bags and branches to beat out the flames if they jumped the break. We were going along quite well until about 10am. That was when the Forestry blokes turned up and read us the riot act for lighting up. Understandably we were not all dressed in the approved uniform (a fact that has since been rectified by mum ordering us all the complete uniforms!) so I can see how they may have thought we were all hobos, but the main guy was certainly on a power trip which didnt endear him to the rest of us in the slightest!
They then took off to 'investigate the situation' and told us to not light up any more. At this point we were fast losing the cool of the morning which would make the fire harder to control if we didnt finish our back-burn soon.
After a little while he and his buddy came back, upped us again for being so 'irresponsible' and then told us to continue back-burning. With the stipulation that we only burn up to 10 feet at a time. I should remind you that we had kms to burn and at this rate we wouldn't be finished until night-fall.
We poked along in this fashion for several hours with only a little bit of snack food (remember - we were only going to be up there for 3 hours) to keep all 8 of our guys going. We took it in shifts, with some of us taking little cat-naps in the back of Dad's work truck while the others kept burning (in 10 foot stretches!) Meanwhile, power-trip dude spent most of his time either walking around his truck, or sitting in it. He let us (and his partner) do all the work! And we were on Forestry land - therefore we didnt even have to be there!

  1. 'Wrinkles on your eyeballs'?! (..I cannot imagine that....)
Very innovative with the doggy icy-poles! It's impressive - it's simple but such a good idea. Did you think of that yourselves?
He (power-trip guy) sounds very strange. But what happens next??
(When do we get to the part when Michael nearly died? - not that I enjoy the idea - am just interested :)

    Love to all,

(My blog still doesn't pick up your posts! frustrating!)

  2. ps Abby is just starting a blog devoted to Maggie, where she'll post photos etc. She's asking everyone to send her their emails and let her know if they would like to have access, as it will be an otherwise private blog - only family and friends allowed.
They are going really well. Abby's milk has come in well, and feeding seems to be working beautifully :) Jessima has really 'popped' too - only 7 weeks to go for her now. She's looking great. Jenna had a bit of an adjustment to make with meeting Maggie for the first time or two, but she's getting there. She just gets cuter herself all the time. Hope your days are happy :)
