Lead up to terrifying ordeal!

It all started Saturday night. About 8:30pm we were finally starting to eat dinner and had just put on the next episode of Grey's Anatomy when we received a phone call from Dad informing us that a fire we'd put out at a neighbour's farm days ago had re-lit and that another neighbour was going to check it out and call us back if we needed to get up there. 15 minutes later Mum called us back and asked us to get ready and she'd see us in 10 minutes (time is a major factor in fire-fighting). So we get dressed (with Michael still trying to finish his dinner as we're going out the door) and rouse Molly (she stays down at Grandma's when we all have to leave as its safer there - greener grass less likely to burn - and she keeps Mum's ancient dog Annie company). So here we are, travelling almost vertically up a fire-break (dozer track marking the boundary of one's property) and assessing the situation. Very serious, as the fire is threatening to break through in several places, but those places were on too steep an incline and so too dangerous for us to fight. Our theory was that the night air would slow the fire down a little bit and then we'd come up in the morning and light a back-burn to contain it before it threatened 3 other properties. When we finally got home it was after midnight and we had to be back up the mountain before 9am to back-burn. Needless to say, we didnt get a whole lot of sleep that night.
More tomorrow!

  1. Bec, I'm hoping you post the next epidode in this story. Michael says that he almost died? I'd really like to hear what happened.
What do you wear when you go out to fight fires? Do you go in your usual car? Do you carry water? Who is in charge when there is a fire?
    Hope you are well.

  2. Hey Bec,

Micky's been telling me a little bit about this - sounds terrifying, so I'm glad you're all okay!
I have to admit that my fav part of this post was the 'Michael was still trying to finish his dinner'... classic michael!
Looking forward to the next post :)
